Why should you invest in a Sealed GLASS Draft Chamber vs. a plastic cover for balances with 0.001g (1 mg) accuracy/resolution?

As you may know, it is extremely important that professional balances, which offer an accuracy/resolution of 0.001g (1mg) or greater, use a SEALED glass draft chamber. This chamber will provide a protective environment during the weighing process. This is because the sealed glass draft chamber prevents air disturbances, such as people/equipment movement, room drafts, etc. that will cause the weighing session to become inaccurate.

In addition, the GLASS will protect the weighing session from STATIC, which will cause measurement errors. Many so-call precision balances use a plastic cover, in which the plastic will cause static related problems during your weighing session. Some claim to use anti-static plastic, which is simply plastic that has been coated with an anti-static layer. Unfortunately, this layer will most likely wear off in as little as six (6) months.

How can you test if STATIC is a problem?
If you currently use a high precision balance with a plastic cover, simply record a measurement reading with the plastic cover attached. Then keeping the same item on the platform, remove the plastic cover and recheck the reading - You will most likely get a different reading due to the STATIC that is caused by the plastic cover.
